How BAB works

BAB (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) is a monthly grant, not a loan — it is never repaid. It is paid from the month you apply, never retroactively, so apply as soon as your apprenticeship contract and move are fixed. The full application walkthrough is in our BAB guide for international apprentices; how to fund the rest of your rent is in the funding overview.

Your rent figure, ready for the form

The application needs a rental contract with a clear rent. At A23 in Großbettlingen that is one number: €395, €495 or €650 all-in per month — including electricity, heating, water and Wi-Fi. See the rooms.

FAQ: the BAB calculator

Do I have to repay BAB?

No. BAB is a full grant, not a loan — it is never repaid. Only money paid out in error, for example after unreported changes, has to be returned.

How accurate is this BAB calculator?

It gives a quick estimate from four inputs so you know whether an application is worth it. The official calculator of the Bundesagentur für Arbeit computes the exact amount.

How much BAB can I get in 2026?

BAB covers the gap between your recognised need — up to €822 per month in 2026 if you live in your own room — and your training pay and parental contribution. Many apprentices receive several hundred euros per month.
