Good news first
Germany subsidises housing for apprentices. If you move out for your apprenticeship, the state — and often your employer — helps pay the rent. The three routes below can be combined, and none of them has to be paid back.
The three routes
- ✓BAB (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe): A monthly grant from the Federal Employment Agency for apprentices in their first in-company apprenticeship who need their own room. Often several hundred euros per month — never repaid. Read the BAB guide or try the quick calculator.
- ✓Wohngeld (housing benefit): The fallback if BAB is ruled out (e.g. second apprenticeship) — apply at the district housing-benefit office (Landkreis Esslingen for Großbettlingen).
- ✓Employer pays the rent: Many training companies cover rent fully or partially to attract apprentices from further away. Just ask your HR department — it is a normal request in Germany.
What you need for any application
